Fix And Conceal Your Cavity At The Same Time

July 15, 2016

You want your smile to look its absolute best, and you want your mouth to be as healthy as possible.

Unfortunately, tooth decay can ruin that for you. Even though more than 90 percent of Americans will have at least one cavity in their lives — and many will have more than one — that doesn’t make it any less troublesome when you get one.

You may realize that you need a filling to deal with tooth decay, but you may not know where to go or what kind of filling to get.

If you live in or near Encino, CA, we would welcome you to visit the dentist office of Ira J. Moin, D.D.S, where our dental bonding treatment bridges the gap between restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding involves using a composite resin to make minor repairs to teeth.

When it is applied to your tooth, the resin can be layered to fill in holes created by tooth decay. When it hardens, your tooth will look and feel complete, and since the resin is white, it may conceal where your cavity was.

This gives dental bonding a distinct advantage over other materials that have been used historically to fill cavities.

Gold fillings were used for a long time because they were long-lasting. Amalgam fillings (which are made with a blend of mercury and other metals like copper, tin, and silver) offered many of the same benefits as gold at a lower cost.

Gold, amalgam, and composite resin all fulfill the primary function of a filling. They will replace the parts of the tooth that were damaged by your cavity, and they will seal that part of the tooth to reduce the risk of a recurring cavity.

The gold and amalgam both have a metallic appearance, however. Depending on where your cavity was and how big it is, these fillings can become a distraction when you smile or when you are talking to someone.

A white filling is more discreet, which means you are much less likely to catch someone staring into your mouth when you want them to listen to what you are saying.

Replacing Old Fillings

It’s important to remember that dental fillings do not last forever. With time, they wear down and need to be replaced.

Sometimes fillings chip or crack. Other times they will separate from your teeth, and they might even fall out.

Those chipped, cracked, separated, or missing fillings expose your tooth to bacteria in places that can’t be cleaned with a toothbrush or by flossing. This is why it’s important to replace old fillings whenever they show signs of wear and tear.

When that time comes, we can replace your metal fillings with our dental bonding material. Just because you had a cavity years ago, that doesn’t mean it should continue to spoil your otherwise great smile.

Are There Other Uses For Dental Bonding?

While we frequently use composite resin to repair teeth that have cavities, that’s not the only reason to consider dental bonding.

This material is also a cost-effective and simple solution for teeth that have been damaged. Million of people have teeth that are chipped or worn down. Dental bonding is a way to rebuild that tooth to its original shape.

Do you have a gap in your smile? Dental bonding may be able to help you, too.

By applying the bonding materially where it’s needed, we can close that space that may make you self-conscious about your smile.

Then again, you may have a tooth that didn’t erupt correctly or is misshapen in some way. We can build up your tooth with our bonding material so it fits in a little better with the teeth around it. This may be just the finishing touch that you need to feel more confident about your smile.

Sometimes A Simple Solution Is The Best Solution

Dr. Moin is a wonderful dentist. He is professional and does excellent work. Everyone in the office is friendly and helpful – so much so that my 6yr old asked if we could go back. We went to him on a family recommendation and I would highly recommend him to family and friends.

My family has been going to Dr. Moin since 1996 and since then, he has been and still continues to be a great dentist. He does an excellent job, whether it’d be extracting a wisdom tooth or simply filling a cavity. You should definitely have Dr. Moin as a dentist; you’re in good hands.

Finally, I found a dentist that is compassionate about what he does. His entire staff is courteous, professional, and caring. I’ve been to many dentist through recommendation of friends and although it wasn’t a bad experience, I haven’t experienced service to this degree. I am a professional in the health care field, and because I work nights and long hours, my bad habits include coffee and drinking soda to stay awake. As a results, I destroyed the enamel on my teeth and soon was embarrassed to smile. I came to Dr. Moin through a referral and was immediately greeted by a friendly, warm staff. I sat in the room with Dr. Moin and explained my concerns and needs. He took the time to listen then explain the procedure and informed me of his 20 plus years experience in cosmetic dentistry. I had an inner warmth and security that somehow validated was he was saying, so proceeded with getting Veneers. Let me tell you, choosing Dr. Moin was the best decision I made. The quality is superb and the price could not be beaten. Colleagues who also have Veneers were shocked about the difference in what they paid compared to what I did and some can’t even tell that I have Veneers. I must say, I highly recommend him to everyone!!! Thank you Dr. Moin and Staff.
