Your Gums Are Important To Your Smile

September 15, 2016

When you think of cosmetic dentistry, what comes to mind?

For many people, teeth whitening is the first thing they think about. It’s relatively simple and a fast way to improve the appearance of your smile.

Dental bonding and dental crowns can help repair teeth that are chipped or worn down. Veneers can help with more extensive changes.

Our point is that most of the time people think about changing their teeth when they think of cosmetic dentistry. However, there is something else to consider if you are interested in making cosmetic improvements at our dentist office in Encino, CA.

Your gums affect the appearance of your smile, too, and Ira J. Moin, D.D.S., has a couple ways to help in that regard.

Changing ‘Gummy’ Smiles

What is a gummy smile? In some sense, it’s something you know that you have if you have it.

A gummy smile is one in which your gum tissue is as noticeable or more noticeable than your teeth. Having a gummy smile causes some people to feel self-conscious about smiling around other people or cause them to smile with their lips pressed firmly together when they pose for a picture.

There are two reasons you may have a gummy smile.

The first is that you have a higher gum tissue to tooth ratio than most people. This is no different than having longer or shorter fingers than other people. It’s just how your body developed.

The second reason you may have a gummy smile is because you have “short” teeth. This isn’t necessarily a reflection on the size of your teeth. Many times, it has more to do with how your teeth erupted.

If you teeth did not extend out of your gumline as much as other people, then your gums may overpower your teeth in your smile.

If you are uncomfortable with your gummy smile, then there is a simple procedure we can perform to help you. It’s called gum reshaping.

Gum reshaping is a way of removing gum tissue in a way that reveals more of your teeth when you part your lips to smile. At our practice, we can use dental lasers, electrosurgery, and more traditional surgical techniques to change the shape of your gums.

If you are interested in this procedure, we will be happy to discuss the different ways of creating the smile that you want to see.

More Gums, Please

Gum disease remains a far too common problem in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control estimated that nearly half of Americans 30 and older have some form of gum disease.

One of the possible symptoms of gum disease is gum recession. This is similar to someone with a receding hairline, except this is your gums pulling back on your teeth.

This can leave your teeth feeling loose, and it can expose the roots of your teeth. Needless to say, it can have a detrimental effect on your smile.

You can’t regrow gum tissue to replace what you have lost, so you may want to consider a gum graft if you are in this situation.

Gum grafting is when we transplant gum tissue to the parts of your mouth where it is needed. This tissue may come from another part of your mouth or it can come from donor tissue.

As you heal, your existing tissue and the transplanted tissue will grow together. This will give you a more natural smile and protect your roots at the same time.

Smile Makeover

Sometimes patients have simple requests. They want stains removed from their teeth. They want to close a gap between their teeth.

In other cases, the cosmetic changes are more complicated. We can combine our cosmetic services in what we call a smile makeover to give you the exact smile you have wished to have.

Gum reshaping or gum grafting can be combined with our other cosmetic services as part of your smile makeover.

We could reshape your gums to reveal more of your teeth and get veneers so your teeth look straighter and whiter. We could use dental bonding to fix your chipped or worn down teeth along with a gum graft to restore your smile.

Those are just two of the many possible ways to combine our services to give you the smile of your dreams.

It’s Not Just Your Teeth

Your teeth may be the primary thing you want to feature in your smile, but your gums play an important part as well.

Ira J. Moin, D.D.S., offers a number of cosmetic services that can reshape and improve the appearance of your smile.

-Mehrdad A, Irvine, CA

Dr. Moin is a wonderful dentist. He is professional and does excellent work. Everyone in the office is friendly and helpful – so much so that my 6yr old asked if we could go back. We went to him on a family recommendation and I would highly recommend him to family and friends.

-Suzie B, Acton, CA

My family has been going to Dr. Moin since 1996 and since then, he has been and still continues to be a great dentist. He does an excellent job, whether it’d be extracting a wisdom tooth or simply filling a cavity. You should definitely have Dr. Moin as a dentist; you’re in good hands.

-Monica U, Valley Village, CA

Finally, I found a dentist that is compassionate about what he does. His entire staff is courteous, professional, and caring. I’ve been to many dentist through recommendation of friends and although it wasn’t a bad experience, I haven’t experienced service to this degree. I am a professional in the health care field, and because I work nights and long hours, my bad habits include coffee and drinking soda to stay awake. As a results, I destroyed the enamel on my teeth and soon was embarrassed to smile. I came to Dr. Moin through a referral and was immediately greeted by a friendly, warm staff. I sat in the room with Dr. Moin and explained my concerns and needs. He took the time to listen then explain the procedure and informed me of his 20 plus years experience in cosmetic dentistry. I had an inner warmth and security that somehow validated was he was saying, so proceeded with getting Veneers. Let me tell you, choosing Dr. Moin was the best decision I made. The quality is superb and the price could not be beaten. Colleagues who also have Veneers were shocked about the difference in what they paid compared to what I did and some can’t even tell that I have Veneers. I must say, I highly recommend him to everyone!!! Thank you Dr. Moin and Staff.
